Sura 56
Aya 34
34
وَفُرُشٍ مَرفوعَةٍ

Ahmed Ali

And maidens incomparable.1
  • Furush, Plural farash, in this verse has been generally translated as ‘beds’ or ‘couches,’ and Marfu‘ah as ‘raised high.’ In fact, furush means maidens of Paradise according to Taj al-‘urus. Raghib says that farash metaphorically means consort or companion, and wife and husband are called each other’s farash. Marfu‘ah means far above or higher than earthly maidens in beauty and elegance: Taj. Otherwise the meaning of vv. 35, 36 and 37 that follow would be lost and become incongruous.
